He grew up in Bourne, graduated from Bourne High School, attended Cape Cod Community College and studied abroad in China just before the Tiananmen student revolution. Later, Blanton studied at the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth, where he earned his B.A. in International Relations (magna cum laude) and an M.B.A. with a focus on public management.
Bourne Selectman Michael Blanton believes in the value of public service, having served as the town of Bourne’s representative to the Cape Cod Commission for eight years and as an elected member of the Bourne Housing Authority for five years. He was appointed to the Falmouth Housing Trust to advise on realty concerns, and is a longtime member of the Cape Cod Selectmen & Councilors Association. Early in his years in civic service, he led local village preservation and conservation efforts as president of the Monument Beach Civic Associates. Later, he was recruited to serve as president of the Buzzards Bay Vitalization Association, following in the footsteps of Main Street business community development advocates Tom Moccia and Jeff Luce.
Blanton is an independent real estate broker, having served the Upper Cape since 2001, and continues to advocate above and beyond in his profession, having been elected Cape-wide by real estate industry peers to the board of directors for the Cape Cod & Islands Association of REALTORS and served as chair of its Government Affairs Task Force. In 2014 he was hired to re-start and manage the tribal court for the Aquinnah Wampanoag Tribe on Martha’s Vineyard, and cites native sovereignty concerns as a longtime professional and personal interest. In the mid-1990's he was also a press and media assistant to U.S. Sen. John Kerry in Washington, D.C. Later he worked at the International Trade Assistance Center in Fall River to promote economic development through international trade development for small to medium sized businesses on Cape Cod and the South Coast area of Massachusetts.
